Hello gang,
The past two weeks have been very chaotic, as this weekend we had our annual companywide event at our office, which took lots of preparation and planning. This took a lot of time while we also had to stay on track and meet deadlines for a few of our projects that we have been working on. The company event was really fun, as I got to meet people from other offices and talk about life/work with them. We started the weekend with a design charrette on Friday for an upcoming project just outside of Minneapolis, which brought me back to the design week we did during second year. It was nice to get back on trace paper, as I have not done anything by hand after starting my internship. Saturday began with a breakfast with the CEO and executives of the company, which was wonderful as I was able to ask the CEO questions about how he started the firm and how he grew it into what it is today. Business talk. I really enjoyed learning about the business and how money is made... something they don't teach us in school. Afterwards, we toured a few of our previous projects, such as the Minnesota Zoo and Minnesota Vikings Training Facility. My favorite was the Vikings training facility because it was really cool to see a landscape design for a client such as an NFL team/organization that players and coaches use every day. I then had a 3-hour break before dinner, which I spent parked at the office and walking to Target Field to catch the end of the Twins game. We then had a happy hour and dinner with everyone at Confluence to end the weekend. Other than our company gathering, I spent some time working on SketchUp and Enscape for a few other projects, further advancing my 3D skills. I also took site visits to a few projects that are under construction and learned how to talk with contractors and understand their language.
Outside of work, I have spent more time getting outside as the weather is finally getting more tolerable. Getting fresh air and going to the gym has really helped me stay active and feel good while sitting at a desk all day. I also have spent more time working on landscaping for my parents' house and a family friend's house. Some days getting home from work and working on more landscape stuff sucks, but I enjoy doing it and am starting to feel like I could be able to start my own thing in the future, which is something I strive for and motivates me every day.
