In The Beginning
Hey everyone! I'm a little late posting these blogs, but there's only one place I can start - in the beginning.
I hope everyone is doing well - it's been really nice seeing what everyone has been up to and I'm sure everyone will continue doing great things! I haven't taken too many pictures recently but hopefully you enjoy this miniature photo dump :)
Before leaving Baton Rouge, I was so nervous about actually packing everything up and moving to Houston - but the move itself actually ended up being one of the easiest parts of the whole process despite being late to my move in day haha. The interstate and layout of the city was also something that took a little while to figure out, but after the first week I pretty much knew where everything I needed was and was fully settled in.
I moved in a little early compared to my move in date, so I was able to take some time and explore the city a bit before I started the true 9-5 lifestyle. Now - I didn't see too much of the city in that time (and I still haven't), but I was able to see some pretty cool places. The thing I was most excited for was the Natural Science Museum - and I would absolutely recommend 100% so if anyone is ever in Houston you should absolutely check it out. If anyone has any site seeing recommendations in the city I would also love to hear; there's so much to see so it's a little overwhelming for me.
After about a week of being in the city, day one finally came. I once again was a nervous wreck because I had no clue what to expect - but my expectations were exceeded. Everyone I met and talked to were so helpful and encouraging during the process and it really made me feel at home at the office. Nothing too exciting really happened during that first week; a lot of my time was taken up doing onboarding and AutoCAD training to make sure I was up to speed with the way SWA approached projects and the workflows associated with it.
Work started picking up for me around week two where I was placed in a group working on a pedestrian park connection project. They had me help with creating plant palette graphics, working on the planting plans, and making details for a raised boardwalk.
I love making layouts so the graphic creation was a pretty east transition into the work life, but my learning curve was with planting plans and the sheet setup that went on behind the scenes. My team was really helpful and I learned a lot within the second week. I also got the chance to go on a site visit! The site had just been prepped and we needed to locate the different utilities and see if they would impact the design - I didn't see much, but seeing how quickly the design may change so deep into the process was a little eye opening for me.
