Sophie Webber takes on the world?

Wow! What an experience it has been so far! I am living in Raleigh, North Carolina and working at CLH design, p.a. in Cary, North Carolina. It has been 4 weeks, and I have already fallen in love with the area, the field, and the people I have met! I am so thankful and happy that I landed here!

WORK: I was SO nervous to walk into the building, but I was so thankful that I had Chloe with me. On my first day, I had lots of meetings, getting everything set up, learning the CLH standard, how the file system works, and meeting everyone in the firm. The firm is a multidisciplinary firm, with Landscape Architects and Civil Engineers. They took us to lunch on the first day and everyone was automatically "chill" and fun but could tell that they mean business. Everyone is always talking and laughing in the firm, that is one of the things that I love most. Another fun thing is Yoga Wednesday. One of the Civil Engineers is a certified Yogi! We have Yoga classes every first and third Wednesday. I have found my few workers that I can ask questions to and I am so thankful for them. I can feel my AutoCAD skills strengthening from all of the planting plans, survey transfers, and staking plans that I have been working on. I have learned that planting plans are my favorite. This week (my fourth week at CLH) I am getting to start coming up with concepts for a new project that I have been handed. I have only been working in AutoCAD so far, but I am about to get to whip out the big guns, Illustrator. Yall know Illustrator is my home girl.

EXPERIENCE: There is nothing more in this world that I love more than travel and exploration. I have been going on walks every day after work, exploring new parks and neighborhoods. 2 Sundays ago, I went to the Umstead State Park and did a 7-mile hike that led to a beautiful hand carved 25 foot fallen tree. It was a beautiful experience. On Saturdays, I either explore Raleigh or take a day trip. In Raleigh, I have hit some museums, the Natural Science and North Carolina Museum of Art, I have found lots of yummy restaurants and fun funky shops. The State Farmers Market in Raleigh has been one of my favorite spots so far. I met this wonderful woman who used to own a cut flower farm (my life goal) and ran her dad's nursery where she worked alongside Landscape Architects. She told Chloe and I that we are going into a magical field full of opportunity. Doesn't that make a girl feel wonderful! She now and makes the most beautiful baskets. I also found a man that makes guitars out of cigar boxes. I think ya'll know where I will be going once I get my first full paycheck...

As for weekend trips, I have gone to Chappel Hill (an adorable little town with the best BLT restaurant in the world), Durham (home to Duke University), Apex (talk about a Hallmark town), and Carrboro.

I cannot wait to see what else this internship entails! I am learning so much about myself and the field, there is no telling what else I will discover.
