GEAUX JEAUX
My first attempt at a blog while interning at SWT Design in St. Louis, MO
During my first week at SWT Design I was debriefed on three projects that I would begin to contribute to. First, I was introduced to SEED STL’s demonstrative garden near the Delmar Divine. Project manager Scott and Ted led a sketch session where they caught me up on existing concepts. For this project, I created a hardscape paving and site walls/furnishings material board and a plant palette. I searched through the reference library to use products that SWT has used before, while learning the ins and outs of the drive. During the same sketch session I was introduced to the project on Lagoon Dr., a Forest Park entrance redesign. The 3rd project I was introduced to this week was a project the KC studio is working on located in North Kansas City. The project is River Forest Park, managed by Lance. Lance briefed Corey and I on the project and from there Corey and I did research on the given information. We were tasked to create concepts for an interpretive sign for a waterfall within the site. With the research we gathered, we were able to create a draft of a concept for the waterfall, focusing on the history of the formation of the waterfall/limestone member it sits on.
My second week at SWT was filled with a lot of firsts. For SEED, I
finished my material and plant palettes that I then got to review with Ted,
Scott, and Will. Later, I got to join meetings with JACOBS, where I was better
informed on some of the constraints that have been hindering the project. I
also created a matrix on a joint page with JACOBS to define the material
aesthetics that the site could potentially be. One of these meetings for SEED
was also my first client meeting (over Microsoft teams) and it was great to
hear the clients perspectives on the updates the team presented. I made sure to
keep their wants in mind as I continued working on the materiality matrix.
Another first I tackled during my 2nd week was working on SketchUp
and Lumion models for the Union-Lindell bridge entrance to Forest Park. For
this, I was tasked to add in the custom Forest Park lamppost in even intervals
along the road. To complete, I had to work back and forth between SketchUp and
Lumion (when they wouldn’t crash on me) to place the lamppost between the
trees, also moving trees when needed to get an even spacing. My final first of
my 2nd week was the quarterly meeting. During this meeting I got to
learn a lot about the behind the scenes of running SWT. I learned about what
goals were met and weren’t, future goals and why they were important, and some
explanations for data related to money. It was great to hear the 2030 goals for
SWT and have team bonding after the meeting was over. The final project I
worked on during my 2nd week, was further creating concepts for
River Forest parks interpretative signage. I turned my hand sketches to
graphics in illustrator and from there made edits and changes to get multiple
iterations.
